Get Your Business Plan In Order
February 9, 2010
When starting your own business you should always have a business plan. Even the smallest company that will operate in the garage needs to have some planning and infrastructure set up. A small business plan may not be as complicated as those who have big businesses already but it is very helpful just the same.
You need to have a plan, especially when you will be asking for loans from the bank or other investors. They have to see the viability of your company of being able to pay back the loan. This will also state how your company will develop and grow in the future—from long-term financial goals to how you will build your small business network. Your company will definitely need more direction when it starts to emerge and really compete in the market. You will eventually move out of your garage and hopefully make it in the Forbes list.

One realm where telephone cabling is still a necessity is in business. Regardless of what industry you are in, it is advisable to have a reliable landline so that customers can call you anytime. The landline also provides a consistent connection and dependability that is often missing from cell phone coverage.

Reliable Seattle Phone System Installation
December 10, 2009
Despite the struggling economy, I was able to move my small business into new office space in downtown Seattle over the summer. When I started the business, it was just me and my wife, but now we have 15 full-time employees and recognized the need for expansion. At first I thought that the transition would be easy, but there were several headaches, from changing over the letterhead to setting up the utilities.
One aspect of the move that was painless, however, was the installation of the phone system. Thanks to the recommendation of one of my clients, I was able to find an affordable Seattle phone system installation company that did that job in a jiffy and caused no problems. I’m happy to say that the business is now thriving in the new location, and we haven’t experienced a single hiccup with the phone system.
Staying Connected
October 28, 2009
Historically, one of the greatest challenges for a young business was developing reliable means of communication, both internally and externally. Small business networking has never been easier than now, whether setting up a network at a home office or in a brick-and-mortar establishment. An effective network will allow you to communicate with co-workers and clients in an efficient manner.
One of the most important aspects of any network is security. There are constantly new worms, bugs and viruses being invented and introduced, so a quality security system should be a top priority. Many companies provide ongoing support when you use their products to set up a network, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
Fiber Optics Founder Awarded Nobel Prize
October 14, 2009
Last week the Nobel Committee handed out a variety of their coveted Nobel Prizes, including one in physics. This year the prize and money was split between three scientists who made amazing discoveries in the 1960s that paved the way for the telecommunications infrastructure we have today. One of the scientists was , who was a pioneer in the field of fiber optic cabling.
Kao worked on the design for wires that were composed of glass fibers, allowing information to travel quicker and more efficiently. Although we may not realize it, fiber optics is all around us and plays a huge role in the technology we use in our daily lives. There is enough fiber optic cable on Earth to wrap around the planet 25,000 times.

Long Distance Audits Save You Money!
There is an article on Telecom Audit Guide that explains the need for businesses to have a yearly telecom audit. I found this information there and thought it was really impressive:
Telecommunications audits are free, and can end up saving a business a ton of money. The audit that the hospital went through covered 4 areas of telecom; local, long distance, cellular and paging, and came up with $789,335.40 in annual savings.
The hospital’s telecom audit showed that they were spending too much in the following areas:
- Local Phone Service: $26,800.95 per month.
- Long Distance Service: $8,175.54 per month.
- Cell Phone Service: $5750 per month.
- Paging Services: $5197.46 per month.
Every business should have an annual telecom audit of their phone bills, their cell phone bills and their local bills. By doing an audit, the hospital above was able to save $800,000.00 per year, and your business could end up save a substantial amount of money also.
Scouting out a New Office Space
September 14, 2009
When my small business began to expand last year, we had to seek out a new office environment. The old one was becoming cramped, and it just didn’t suit our changing needs. It was my job to scope out new quarters, and the task wasn’t a simple one. I had a rudimentary grasp of the sort of space we would need – a place big enough to accommodate 30 employees, their desks and computers, and an additional space for a conference room.
After scouting out locations, I finally chose the one that seemed best-suited for the company. It had been used as an enormous single-family dwelling up until the occupant and his family moved out. Suddenly it became clear that I hadn’t done all my homework. The space wasn’t equipped for network cabling. I began to panic. Luckily someone from our company knew of a place that could handle every aspect of the wiring process – even drilling holes in the floor.
